Jamie Rose receives WHNPA 2007 Project Grant
Freelance photographer Jamie Rose has been selected as the recipient of the White House News Photographers Association Education Committee 2007 Project Grant.
“Isolated: On the front lines with MSF in Northern Uganda” is about the doctors, nurses and aid workers of Medicins Sans Frontiers (Doctors Without Borders) and their work in the in the refugee camps in northern Uganda as they work to provide medical services to the 1.3 million refugees in the 20-year-long war between the Lord’s Resistance Army (the rebels) and the Ugandan military.
“Jamie wants to not only document an organization (MSF) that seems to get far too little credit for their work but do so in a war few people know is being fought”, Leighton Mark, WHNPA Education committee Chairman said.
Rose, who has worked with MSF in Africa before, plans to concentrate her efforts on the MSF volunteers and the plight of their patients, producing still photos, text, audio and a multimedia product. She also plans to give lectures upon her return to the United States to heighten awarness of the situation in Northern Uganda.

PHOTO OP -- WWII Veterans to Visit the Mall

In 10 days, America will celebrate Veteran's Day Weekend. If you're looking
for an incredible story to feature during a weekend when America's focus is on
our national heroes, we would like to make you aware of our program's success.
At the end of November, we will have flow over 5000 of them to their
long-awaited, precious WWII Memorial. Almost all the veterans we've taken HAD
previously given up all hope of ever visiting THEIR memorial.
Between now and next weekend, we have two large groups of WWII Veterans (and
terminally ill Korean and Vietnam Veterans) heading to Washington DC.
On Saturday, 3 November 2007, over 866 veterans and guardians from several
states will be flown into the DC area.
On Wednesday, 7 November 2007, the FIRST corporate sponsored chartered flight
from Michigan and the FIRST high school lead commercial flight from Missouri
will be meeting at the WWII Memorial. All groups that come in are personally
met by Senator Bob Dole.
We are inviting media to come to Washington DC to cover these
"once-in-a-lifetime" events. Ken Burns' most recent effort "The War,"
continues to generate tremendous attention and admiration for America's most
senior heroes. In another 5-10 years, almost all of the WWII Veterans will be
gone.

Congratulations to WHNPA members, Pege Gilgannon, Doug Wilkes, and Samara Ewing. They will be among the "Silver Circle Honorees" at the National Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences ceremony on November 3, 2007. The Silver Circle honors those who have made significant contributions to the industry over 25 years or more in our area! Please tell them how proud of them you are when you have a chance! They are still inspiring many of us on a daily basis.
Jeff Tinsley
Jeff Tinsley's wife, Beth, is in the ICU at Fairfax Hospital. She had a brain aneurysm a week ago last Friday. There are good signs of progress, but it will be a long road to recovery. Jeff says that you can try to call, but right now he has his hands full. The answering machine and emai system are bouncing back messages, so if you're trying to reach him, that's the situation. We'll keep you updated on her condition.
Fulbright Fellow ( Senior Scholar ) Vivian Ronay will be in based in Cairo for 4 months, affiliated with American U in Cairo (AUC). She will be traveling outside of Cairo shooting Coptic and Greek Orthodox monasteries as well as certain Islamic festivals and mosques. Then she goes to Jerusalem to teach at Hadassah College and to re-visit sites shot previously with super grainy film (all work is done with available light) as well as places new to the project. Vivian teaches a seminar on 'photography projects' and so it fits whether the students are interested in documentary/photoj or do work closer to fine art. She is scheduling in a month of extra time after the Fulbright and will decide whether to visit some sites either east of the Arabian Peninsula or a few sites in Europe to fill out this body of work. If anyone has contacts in Teheran, please contact Vivian. Her site is http://www.ronayphoto.com
Pete Souza retired from the CHICAGO TRIBUNE and is teaching at Ohio University. A camera bag might have been a bit out of place for Professor Souza so the WHNPA presented Pete with a briefcase at a retirement gathering. October 6 "PHOTOJOURNALISM: SURVIVING THE DIGITAL CHALLENGE" A full day of exploration into the evolution of stills into the world of video due to the demands for web content. Ward Hall, American University, Saturday 9 AM - 5 PM. DOWNLOAD THE PDF FLYER
The Seminar, Surviving the Digital Challenge, presented by WHNPA and American University School of Communication, was a success. Over one hundred and thirty people came and stayed on a beautiful Saturday, which could have been enjoyed in many other ways. Lucian Perkins, and Steve Crowley put on magnificent presentations. Pierre Kattar explained the grammar of video sequencing which permitted the audience to see what a videojournalist has in mind in the construction of a story. The highlight of the afternoon was a presentation, perhaps a revival session, by Michael Rosenblum, a pioneer of "backpack" journalism. Evan Nisselson and Keith Jenkins were contributors on the final panel, which shed some light on the future of the news gathering profession.

(Washington, DC) The White House News Photographers Association will present Frank Johnston with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2007 ‘Eyes of History’ annual awards gala Saturday, April 28, 2007, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Washington, DC.
Frank Johnston’s history making photos included the Oswald shooting, the war in Vietnam, the massacre of Jim Jones followers in Guyana, Watergate, space shuttle launches, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and every presidential administration since Lyndon Johnson.
Looking back, Frank says it was his photo of a wounded Marine in Peace Church (An Hoa), under siege by the North Vietnamese, which affected him most. The Marine was sitting on the altar, a statue of Jesus on a cross behind his helmeted head. After traveling to the church in 1998 with Robert Sutter, an Atlanta man who believed the photo to be that of his deceased brother, Frank was called by another Marine -Mike Tripp, who said he was the man in the photo. He was, and Frank made an emotional trip to Atlanta to introduce Tripp and Sutter.
United Press International hired Johnston in 1963. He joined the staff of The Washington Post in 1968 was a staff photographer until his retirement in 2003. Frank, who married his wife Nancy in 1968, was the first photographer to receive the Alicia Patterson Fellowship and spent a year traveling the United States to photograph social and economic change. His work appeared in newspapers, magazines, books, and textbooks. The co-author of two books, “The Working White House,” and “Jonestown Massacre,” he also contributed to four “Day in the Life” books: America, Spain, California, and the Soviet Union. Frank Johnston was named White House News Photographers Association photographer of the year in 1978, 1979 and 1985. He has been honored with awards from the Overseas Press Club, World Press Photo and the National Press Photographers Association.

DVD NEWS
For the last 4 years WHNPA has produced a DVD companion to the Eyes of History book that includes all of the winning video entries, the video highlights reel and the lifetime achievement award winner's video biography. In the past we have enjoyed the generous support from Thompson / Grass Valley in underwriting the costs of the DVDs that are given to all of our members and guests at the Eyes of History gala. Unfortunately, this year Thompson / Grass Valley has informed us that they will not be able to sponsor the DVD. We are trying to secure other corporate sponsors for this project, but at this time it does not look like we will be able to continue the production this year. Your association needs your support and if anyone has any leads for new sponsors, let Heidi know.

CHRIS USHER RECEIVES WHNPA 2006 PROJECT GRANT
Freelance photojournalist Chris Usher has been selected by the White House Education Committee as the recipient of the WHNPA 2006 Project Grant, committee chairman Leighton Mark announced.
The $5,000 award will help in the production of Usher's project - "One of Us: Portraits & Interviews of Hurricane Katrina's America". He hopes to photograph and have an audio interview of at least one evacuee from each state in the country including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico
"While natural disasters almost always leave a path of death and destruction, Hurricane Katrina was devastating to an immense number of people over a large geographically area," Mark said. "Chris' project is about the people of Katrina, not just the horrors of the immediate aftermath, but what happened to these people. Some have returned to New Orleans but a number are spread across the United States; some have chosen start a new life in another city, another state; others are just waiting for relief so they can return to what's left.
He not only will have the photos, which he hopes to do along the lines of the legenday Karsh - waiting for THE moment when the mask we all present to the public drops, but high quality audio of each of the victims talking about their experiences, as well.
"This was a hurricane - a single event that lasted a few hours," Mark said. "Yet like the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, people have had to pick up and move to try and find a new life for themselves and their families, that makes Katrina an historical event and years from now we can look back at what Chris has done and see the people of Katrina just like we can look back at the work of the FSA photographers and see what happened, what was happening, to the people whose lives were literally blowing away.
At least that's the plan.
And we're glad the WHNPA could help." Usher is hoping to turn the finalized project into a book and a traveling multimedia exhibition.

Wires Reject Handout Photo Of Bush Speech
The White House refused to let journalists shoot still pictures of the president at the podium after his prime-time address on the Iraq war.....
Two major wire services, the Associated Press and Reuters, refused to accept the handout photo. They sent their members notices explaining that frame grabs from the White House video pool would be their only photo coverage of the speech..... Dennis Brack, a longtime White House photographer and president of the White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA), calls the limited access "unacceptable" and says it is very unusual for a presidential address to be closed to photographers. "It's not the first time I'm sure, but it's very infrequent, and I've been around since LBJ's time," Brack says. "The speech was a very historic speech of news value, and they elected to manage it as a public relations function." (READ MORE at PDNonline )
January 12, 2007: "White House stiffs news photogs" by Frank James
The Chicago Tribune news blog The Swamp cites the PDN article above, and also offers this interpretation: "Some might ask what's the big deal? It's just a photo after all. The answer is that reputable news organizations don't really want to be in the business of reproducing government handouts or other canned government information." Blog posters propose their own more cynical explanations as to why the White House is trying to limit 'live' access ..

TWO NEW CATEGORIES IN DEVELOPMENT FOR NEXT YEAR'S STILL CONTEST
The Executive Board of WHNPA is pleased to announce two new categories for The Eyes of History competition will be developed in 2007. In addition to the Still and Television categories, we will be launching a New Media Category and a Student Portfolio Category. The New Media category will award web sites that integrate a mix of audio, video, stills, graphics and database driven information to tell stories on the web. The rules and requirements will be determined over the course of the next year. The Student Portfolio Category will be awarded for a portfolio of still images and will officially start in the 2008 competition. The portfolio rules and requirements will be determined over the course of the next year and will be announced in 2007. The competition will be open to members and nonmembers who are actively pursuing a degree. There will be a nominal fee for all entries. Current student members will have a discounted rate for application for the award. We will be working with our sponsors to determine an award for the winner of the category.
Pierre Kattar will be the chair of the New Media committee and Jamie Rose will be chairing the Student committee for 2007. Both are seeking current members to sit on the steering committees for each category. Members will help determine the rules and requirements of this category for the competition, just as the TV and Still committees currently decide. Please contact Pierre, Jamie, or Heidi if you are interested in participating.

A Lens on an Era: A Just-Closed D.C. Photo Developer Documented The Turbulent March From Camelot to Watergate
By Lisa Frazier Page
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, January 17, 2007
The black-and-white photographs scattered on tables and in boxes throughout the Capitol Hill photo shop tell of a time long gone....In an era when Washington was the epicenter of explosive politics and social change, George Asman was the go-to guy for the legions of Capitol Hill photographers documenting the era, the man who froze these and other historic moments on film. His shop -- Asman Custom Photo, 924 Pennsylvania Ave. SE -- delivered to the world some of Washington's most famous images from the Kennedy years, the civil rights movement and the Nixon tumult.... "It's the end of a good life," said [ WHNPA President ] Dennis Brack...one of Asman's original customers. "It's sad to lose a friend. All I can do is look back and think of the guy behind the counter. He saved my professional life, and he did it for decades."....
