NPPA "CUTTING EDGE" COMPETITION WELCOMES WHNPA ENTRANTS
Effective immediately, the NPPA Cutting Edge Competition is now open to all visual editors, anywhere in the world!
Video editors who are not members of the National Press Photographers Association or the White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA, see below) will now be able to enter the Competition with a per-entry fee of $10 (made payable to "NPPA, Inc."). These entrants will be able to submit one entry in each of the five categories, and WILL receive points toward the annual "NPPA Cutting Edge Editor of the Year" Award.
Members of the WHNPA have been able to submit to the contest for free for the past year, though did not earn points toward the annual "NPPA Cutting Edge Editor of the Year" Award. Effective immediately, WHNPA entrants will now be treated as if they were members of the NPPA. WHNPA entrants will simply supply proof of their membership in the organization ( e.i. photocopy of their membership card).
This is a very exciting time as we move forward to build up the reputation and prestige of the Competition, and do our part to build up the NPPA.
Happy Holidays, and Merry Christmas!

REMEMBERING GORDON DAVIS
UPPER MARLBORO, MD (December 19, 2006) - WJLA-TV reports that the station's overnight photographer, Gordon Davis, 51, was struck by a car and killed around 2:40 a.m. this morning while walking across Route 301 in suburban Maryland after covering a fire at a shopping center. Reports say Davis was going back to his vehicle after filming a fire in a framing store in a shopping mall when he was hit by a southbound car. The driver immediately stopped and alerted firefighters, who attended to the injured photographer, police said. Davis was transported to the Southern Maryland Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead a short time after arrival. Funeral arrangements have been finalized and a memorial fund for his fifteen-year-old daughter, Megan, has been established. (READ MORE...)

Steven Tiffen, president of The Tiffen Company, today announced the passing of his father, and company founder, Nat Tiffen. The senior Mr. Tiffen passed away peacefully on November 21st.
The Tiffen Company was founded in 1938 by Nat Tiffen, with brothers, Leo and Sol. And now this great man has peacefully gone to his resting place to be with his beloved Helen, my mother and the love of his life. My father contributed so much to so many people and to the industry he loved and served. He always considered it a privilege to work in an industry he loved, doing what he loved to do. We will forever remember his quiet way along with his great strength and we will forever be grateful for a full life well lived. My family and I want to thank all of you for your thoughts of kindness and your prayers.”

The Fall 2006 EDITION OF THE REPORT
The Fall edition of the WHNPA's newsletter THE REPORT features a remembrance of Vince Finnigan, a funny behind-the-scenes look at the temporary White House Press trailer, and a thought-provoking essay on digital photo manipulation and photojournalistic ethics by Robert Trippett, a freelance photojournalist for World Picture News. You can read Trippett's essay online or download the newsletter in PDF format.
Here's a brief excerpt:
The moment a photojournalist releases the shutter a sacred threshold is crossed. The instant after the shutter blinks open and closed, whether for a thousandth of a second to freeze the impact of a baseball bat on a ball, or for several hours to soak up the faint glow of a passing comet, the door also shuts for a photojournalist to manipulate that captured representation of reality. Any technical choices made before that moment are generally accepted as tools for achieving the photographer’s vision. Any digital post processing beyond generally accepted darkroom techniques are considered a prohibited manipulation of that sacrosanct moment of exposure.
Adobe PhotoShop is a powerful and insidiously seductive tool, offering control of a photograph to the level of individual pixels. We have all heard the career-ending horror stories about photojournalists who have selfdestructed using PhotoShop to flagrantly alter their photographs. Others may just fudge the line a little as they attempt to enhance their images. The latest PhotoShop flame out was a Reuters’ freelance photographer who manipulated a photo he took of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. In an attempt to delineate this murky line between vision and manipulation I thought it might be useful to pose a few simple questions: READ MORE ...

General Membership meeting Nov. 14, 2006, at the National Press Club. We'll have a 6:30 p.m. reception with light refreshments. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. Dirck Halstead will show photographs and talk about his book "MOMENTS IN TIME." Please watch your mailboxes for your postcard announcements. See you there.
Dirck Halstead is one of America’s preeminent photojournalists, whose iconic images have graced more covers of Time magazine than any other photographer’s. From the battlefields of Vietnam to the halls of the White House to film sets around the world, Halstead’s sense of timing and eye for the revealing shot was unerring throughout his 50-year career. Among the 300 photographs in this collection are many that are instantly recognizable, such as Bill Clinton embracing Monica Lewinsky, or Nixon saluting with his famous V-for-victory sign. Others have become more resonant with the passage of time. Throughout, Halstead provides fast-paced, lively, and engaging accounts of his experiences in the field. A one-of-a-kind autobiography in words and pictures, MOMENTS IN TIME is a half-century of history seen through one photographer’s lens. Dirck Halstead’s photos have won every major prize in the industry, including the Robert Capa gold medal and two Eisies. He is currently a senior fellow in photojournalism at the Center for American History at the University of Texas, and he runs the award-winning webzine the Digital Journalist. Halstead lives in Austin, TX.

ATTENTION VIDEO MEMBERS -- NOTE FROM NPPA ABOUT 2007 SEMINARS AND CONTESTS
Subject: TVQECC
Date: Wed, 9 Aug 2006
From: Jeramy Rosenberg <nppaediting@gmail.com>
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Final results from the Third Quarter NPPA Television Quarterly Editing Clip Contest are now available at
http://www.nppa.org/competitions/quarterly_clip_contests/TV_editing
I'd also like to announce a couple of changes for next year.
First...
The NPPA Cutting Edge Seminar will take place as scheduled in January 2007, however, there will be a second seminar scheduled for late summer of 2007 as well. Beginning in 2008, the seminar will be held in late summer from then on. For more information, please contact the Seminar Director, Shawn Montano, at shawnmontano@gmail.com.
Second...
Because of the change in the Cutting Edge Seminar date, the contest y ear no longer needs to run from Fourth Quarter of one year to the Third Quarter of the next. So, the 2007 contest year will be a FIVE-QUARTER contest year:
Fourth Quarter 2006
First Quarter 2007
Second Quarter 2007
Third Quarter 2007
Fourth Quarter 2007
Beginning with First Quarter 2008, the contest year will run a standard calender year, from First Quarter to Fourth. There has been much discussion on the best way to enable this change, and this is what we believe will be the fairest for everyone involved.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this change, you may feel free to contact me.
Thank you for your time, thank you to the judges for your hard work, and thank you all for entering. Congratulations to our Third Quarter winners!
Sincerely,
Jeramy Rosenberg

A note to the members from WHNPA president Dennis Brack
This is a perfect time to ask WHNPA members what they would like from their association.
What follows are a few questions, but please let the e-board know your thoughts on things
that may not be included on this list.
• What can WHNPA do for its members?
• What projects, issues would you like WHNPA to work on?
• What kind of meetings would you be interested in and would attend?
• Where is the ideal location for a WHNPA meeting?• Perhaps there is a better time or format for the meetings?
• In addition to regular meetings, any interest in informal social meetings? (Could be at the lunch or cocktail hour?)
• What are your feelings about the Contest? What changes would you suggest?
• What are your suggestions to improve the dinner? The Contest? The Exhibit?
Please let us know...thanks for your time.

BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT FROM GARY HAYNES
A book about UPI Newspictures that will be in bookstores the first week of September, "Picture This!" published by Time/Warner Hachette. The "author" is Gary Haynes. That would be me. Several WHNPA members worked for UPI and are represented in this 256-page book, which is a tribute to a once-great company (which exists today in name only, with fewer than two dozen employees, none of them photographers) that for 30 years went toe-to-toe with the larger and richer Associated Press and, more often than not, out-shot and out-thought them.
Walter Cronkite wrote the foreword. He, as many of us did, started our careers with UPI. The text and the newly written captions tell not only about the pictures, but how some of them came to be -- a photo of George Bush in the surf shot by WHNPA member Joe Marquette with an instant camera -- that sort of thing.
For more information on the book and a personal account by Gary Haynes, visit the WHNPA BOOKS page.

MICHAEL PETERSON CBS cameraman Bob Peterson's son was killed in a auto accident on July 29th. Michael Peterson was working his way to the top of his game. Michael entered our profession working as a sound for his father's production company. He went on to work on productions such as "AMERICA'S MOST WANTED". An extended assignment covering the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina took up a large part of last year. On this story he ran into his father and his brother covering the same story. Michael achieved a great deal in a brief period, but above all Michael Peterson was "Everyone's Best Friend."
A celebration of Michael's life was held at 11:00 AM on September 16th, at the Potomac United Methodist Church , 10300 Falls Road, Potomac, Maryland.

Phone: (202) 547-7424 http://www.nahc.org/fd/index.html
On the Agenda:
Copyright, contracts and intellectual property law:
A Quick Course for Editors & Photographers
Lawyers Christopher Winters and Brad Newberg from the team at Newberg & Winters LLP located in Tyson's Corner (www.newbergwinters.com) will present a "crash course" in how the law effects our industry and what rights we have over images, contracts and intellectual property. They will tailor the discussion specifically to news photographers, videographers and editors. The two former big firm lawyers branched away from that type of law to start a personalized, smaller firm specializing an intellectual property, copyright and patent issues for both corporate and individual clients.
This presentation will also help differentiate between things individuals can do on their own and which cases are best handled by lawyer. Christopher and Brad will discuss everything from cease-and-desist letters to the Orphan Act of 2006. Following a brief question and answer session we'll have wine & cheese in the courtyard
See you there.

WASHINGTONIAN ARTICLE: Reporters as Shooters—the Newest New Journalism Arrives at the Washington Post
Shortly after Steve Coll became managing editor of the Washington Post in 1998, he wrote a memo about the coming marriage of print and Internet journalism. He said that future reporters would be outfitted with video cameras, which could be attached to their hats, almost like the little press cards stuck in fedoras back in the old days.In the newsroom, reporters laughed and called the futuristic reporting device “hatcam.”No one’s laughing now: The Post is shipping digital video cameras to its bureaus. Post reporters are expected to report in multimedia...

BOOK NEWS
Congratulations to WHNPA member Arthur Grace on the publication of his new book, State Fair.
Arthur Grace’s State Fair is an affectionate, skillful, and keen observation of a quirky phase of our human comedy. In deceptively casual black-and-white photographs totally absent of attitude and theatrics, his instant observation quickly cuts to the chase, presenting visuals with nothing superfluous and nothing left out. Let us thank our lucky stars that Grace has taken the time and energy to examine and bring us something of our American culture that is original, unique, and essentially uncorrupted.”
Elliott Erwitt (from the dust jacket of State Fair)

State Fair By Arthur Grace
“I couldn’t help thinking if aliens ever landed on Earth and you only had a few hours to help them understand America, all you would have to do is take them to any state fair. For me, a state fair is a microcosm of America--in all its glory and weirdness—at any given point in time.”
-Arthur Grace (from the introduction)
From prize winning pigs to corn dog-eating contests, from beauty queens to marching bands, from gravity defying midway rides to miracle machines for back pain, from butter sculptures to demolition derbies, state fairs are a mother lode of pure Americana.
State Fair is a visual distillation of Arthur Grace’s photographic odyssey through fairs in ten states – California, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and Virginia. Time and again, regardless of geographical location, Grace’s images deftly capture with remarkable authenticity the strange mixture of the traditional, the kitsch, and the off-the-wall that is unique to these annual gatherings, which began as a celebration of rural American life and have evolved into super-sized extravaganzas. Sure to bring back vivid memories for anyone who’s ever attended a state fair, and bound to entice the uninitiated.
State Fair was released in April, 2006. ISBN 0-292-71287-1 $34.95 hardcover 9 ½ x 9 ½ in. 128 pp. 96 duotone photos.
Arthur Grace is a former staff photographer for Newsweek magazine. Throughout his award-winning career, his photographs have appeared in magazines worldwide, including on the covers of Life, Time, Newsweek, Paris Match, and Stern. He has published two previous books, Choose Me: Portraits of a Presidential Race and Comedians. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Debra.

WHNPA Presidential Exhibit AT THE NEWSEUM:
In case you missed the mailing and previous e-mails. The White House News Photographers Association and the Newseum are working together on a photographic exhibition scheduled to coincide with the 2008 Inauguration and the Newseum's reopening. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the work of WHNPA members who have documented the President of the United States since the founding of our association in 1921. We need your help to make this exhibition a success. While this may seem like a long way off, we are in need of your help NOW. We are asking all members, past and present, to submit the ONE or TWO of your best high-resolution photos of each president you have covered. We will need the proper credit, caption information and date for each image. We will also need to know the copyright owner of the image and the contact information for the copyright owner. We will especially need help from the veteran members of the association tracking down the work of our retired or deceased members. If any of you can contact the family or news organization of past members to get a high-resolution file of their images of past presidents, please do so. Since we are an all-volunteer organization, we are asking the membership to please take the initiative to help track down these images. You will determine the scope and success of this exhibition. We are only looking to display these images at the Newseum for this specific exhibition. It is imperative for the WHNPA to have the contact information for the photographer and copyright owner, especially if we look to expand this project. Once we have all of the images, we will work with the Newseum to determine what images will be a part of the exhibition. Please send a CD with the high-resolution images to the White House News Photographers Association, 7119 Ben Franklin Station, Washington, DC 20044 on or before April 21, 2006. If you are still in the process of locating the image or copyright owner, please don't let the deadline prevent you from tracking down the information. We would like to have an early idea of what images we have to work with, but we certainly want to have a representative group of images to highlight the historic and important work of our members. If you have any questions, please call the WHNPA office phone at 202-785-5230 or e-mail sawphotos@verizon.net, or WHNPA Business Director Heidi Elswick at heidi@whnpa.org .MORE INFO or CLICK TO DOWNLOAD/PRINT A PDF of this information.
Please help The WHNPA spread the word about the High School Seminar to be held on Sunday, April 30, 2006, at The Corcoran College of Art + Design. A poster for you to share with your local High Schools is available for download.

A letter from NPPA for our video members....
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Beginning with the First Quarter of 2006, members of the White House News Photographers Association will be eligible to compete in the NPPA Television Quarterly Editing Clip Contest. WHNPA members will have all the rights of NPPA members in this contest, except they will not receive points toward the NPPA Cutting Edge Editor of the Year Award. To enter, they will submit a photocopy of their WHNPA membership cards rather than filling out the NPPA membership number portion of the official entry form.
This arrangement is mutually beneficial. For the WHNPA, it gives their video editors an opportunity to compete in a national contest, four times a year, in addition to the annual "Eyes of History" contest. It also gives them an opportunity to have their work critiqued. It gives the NPPA more exposure in an important market, at the local, national and international levels. It creates greater exposure within the WHNPA, strengthening the bond between the two organizations. It further expands the TVQECC outside of Denver, and will raise the level of quality among our winners. It pushes forward the level of photojournalism we hope to achieve, and that is why we exist. Finally, it could ultimately add new members to the NPPA.
I look forward to working with the WHNPA and strengthening the relationship between the two organizations.
Sincerely,
Jeramy Rosenberg
NPPA TVQECC Chairperson

*Registration for the NPPA 2006 Flying Short Course is now open.
The 2006 Flying Short Course:
A Unique Lineup of Photojournalists, Editors, and History
NPPA’s 49th annual Flying Short Course is coming up in October and this year’s
line-up of speakers promises a program that will be long remembered, including
photojournalism’s living legend John G. Morris of Paris; Best Of Photojournalism’s
Photojournalists of the Year David Guttenfelder of the Associated Press and Josh
Meltzer of The Roanoke Times; Gail Fisher of the Los Angeles Times; WHNPA member
Michel duCille of The Washington Post; and Colin Mulvany of the Spokesman-Review.
The Flying Short Coursewill follow last year’s successful model of offering a full
day of local and regional programs packaged with a second full day of presentations
and sessions by the national traveling faculty, and of being hosted by and
affiliated with a college photojournalism program at each of the three national
stops.
“This year’s program is going to be something special,” event organizer David
Einsel said today. “We have a great mix of professionals and topics of discussion.
But, I am especially excited about having John G. Morris on the faculty. John has
touched the lives of so many photographers and editors – both directly and
throughhis work. Here is a guy who has worked with W. Eugene Smith, Robert Capa,
Alfred Eisenstaedt, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, to name just a few. These
photographers set the standards for the rest of us, and John was there with them.
He was the first executive editor of Magnum Photos and has worked at Life, National
Geographic, and a number of the leading newspapers in America. John has lived the
history that is the basis for almost everything we do as visual journalists. What
an absolutely amazing opportunity this is to be able to see, in person, one of the
true legends of our time.”
The Flying Short Course’s first day kicks off on Friday, October 20, 2006, at Temple
University in Philadelphia, PA, with presentations by the national traveling
faculty. The local and regional hands-on workshops and break out sessions will
follow all day on Saturday, October 21. (Read more)
WASHINGTONIAN ARTICLE: Reporters as Shooters—the Newest New Journalism Arrives at the Washington Post
Shortly after Steve Coll became managing editor of the Washington Post in 1998, he wrote a memo about the coming marriage of print and Internet journalism. He said that future reporters would be outfitted with video cameras, which could be attached to their hats, almost like the little press cards stuck in fedoras back in the old days.
In the newsroom, reporters laughed and called the futuristic reporting device “hatcam.”No one’s laughing now: The Post is shipping digital video cameras to its bureaus. Post reporters are expected to report in multimedia...

(1/30/06) Photogs Slam White House Use of Staged Pictures
By Joe Strupp, editorandpublisher.com, Published: January 30, 2006 12:05 AM ET
NEW YORK-- White House photographers aren't looking for a handout these days. In fact, they've gotten far too many. While the practice of providing news organizations with staged photos of events involving the president goes back decades, veteran shooters at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue say it has become almost a regular occurrence with the Bush Administration. A review of Associated Press archives found that during the entire eight years of the Clinton administration, only 100 handout photos of events were released to the press. During the first five years of Bush's presidency, more than 500 have been distributed. The key is that each of these events was closed to news photographers....

WHNPA OBJECTS TO WHITE HOUSE PHOTO RELEASES:
As you know, The White House News Photographers Association is voicing a strong objection to the White House's increasing use of "official" photo releases. Track ongoing developments in this important story --additional developments will be detailed here.
(1/22/06)The WHNPA believes that dealing with handout photos at the time handout restrictions are imposed is the best way to stop the trend of preventing independent press coverage of an event. In doing so, we can prevent organizers or governments from imposing additional restrictions down the line. Ensuring our ability of the independent press to cover events of public interest should be our main priority. We encourage and support those news orgaizations who are willing to take the initial hard decision to boycott or refuse coverage in order to secure press access in the future. READ MORE

WHNPA
AWARDS $5,000 PROJECT GRANT
Laura Sikes, a freelance
photographer living in Alexandria, Virginia, has
been chosen the recipient of the WHNPA 2004 Project
Grant by the WHNPA Education Committee.
Her project, "Poor
From the Start",
will document the lives o the residents of DeSoto
County, Florida who were struck by Hurricane Charley,
Hurricane Frances and Hurricane Jeanne during the summer.
DeSoto County has a diverse population, but U.S. Census
Bureau dat shows almost 25% of the nearly 34,000 people
live below the poverty level - and that was before
the hurricanes of 2004.
"Although Florida newspapers will
undoubtedly do a great deal of coverage of the reconstruction,
I image it will almost all be local and Laura's approach
will offer a look at one small, primarily agricultural
region that was slammed by Mother Nature," WHNPA
Education Committee Chairman Leighton Mark said. "The
grant will not only assist Laura in her project but
will provide a national stage showing what these people
are going through to put their lives back together."
