(WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 15, 2008) – An Exhibit of the winning entries of The White House News Photographers Association “Eyes of History” Contest will open at the Edison Place Gallery, (700 Block of 8th Street NW(between G and H Streets)
Washington, DC) with a reception at 7 p.m.. Many of the nation’s top photojournalists and videojournalists will attend and will be available to talk about their prize winning video and still images and stories.
The Exhibition at the Edison Place Gallery will be open to the public at no charge from July 17th to August 20th. Hours are: Tuesday through Friday noon to 4p.m.

In Memoriam: Tony Snow

Tony Snow was respected by all WHNPA members who worked with him for decades as a dedicated newsman and an oustanding press secretary. Above all he was a friend and we will miss him. Tony’s wife, Jill, and their children, Kendall, Robbie, and Kristi are in our thoughts and prayers.

Last year Charlottesville, Virginia, hosted the first annual LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph. It was a fantastic three days of "peace, love, and photography" and in our inaugural year, we celebrated the careers of legendary photographers Sally Mann, Eugene Richards, and William Albert Allard with gallery shows and on-stage interviews. Additionally, we transformed the historic downtown Charlottesville into a "living image" with world-class photography exhibitions, outdoor projections, master presentations, film screenings, and special events. This coming June 12-14, we will do it all over again with an all-new lineup of photographers, including our three featured artists: Mary Ellen Mark, Joel-Peter Witkin, and James Nachtwey.

Also new in 2008 are the LOOK3 Workshops and Project Critique Sessions. Photographers of all skill levels will find invaluable instruction and experience by enrolling in classes taught by renowned photographers David Alan Harvey, William Albert Allard, Eugene Richards and Lynn Johnson. The shooting workshops will be intense 5-day courses (June 7-12) in which students will craft a body of work from start to finish during the week, learn to work under a deadline, edit and sequence their images, and develop and refine their skills as a shooter.
The Project Critique Sessions will be one-day classroom sessions led by professional photographer Maggie Steber and MaryAnne Golon, Director of Photography at Time magazine. Maggie and MaryAnne will help photographers with an existing project uncover the seed of the work, talk about approach and point of view, edit and sequence the work, and identify a strategy for moving it forward. With encouragement, insight, and renewed inspiration, attendees will walk away energized and confident about the future of their project.
The 2008 ‘Eyes of History’ traveling exhibit is currently at the International Photography Hall of Fame and is moving to the Press Club and Hood College later this year.

WHNPA STUDENT PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR CONTEST 2008

The WHNPA student photographer of the year is Michael Mullady of San Francisco State University. The judges awarded honorable mentions to the following portfolios: Travis Dove of Ohio University, Jenn Ackerman of Ohio University and Justin Maxon of San Francisco State University.
The contest took place on March 15 at American University’s Ward Building auditorium. We had over 40 entries from over 20 schools around the country this year. This year’s judges were Katie Ellsworth, Photo Editor for Time Magazine, Gina Martin, Collections Manager for the National Geographic Society + Look3 Festival Coordinator, and WHNPA Photographer of the Year Jahi Chikwendiu, staff photographer for The Washington Post. We are really lucky to have such great talent on this year’s judging panel.

WHNPA President Dennis Brack is announcing the formation of a nominating
committee. The three members who will serve on the nominating committee are:
Jim Brantley (jbrantley@washingtontimes.com), Ben De La Cruz
(Ben.DeLaCruz@wpni.com) and Peter Morris (Peter.Morris@cnn.com). If you wish
to nominate a member for any of the open positions mentioned below, you need to contact one
of them. They will contact the nominated members and check to see if they are
willing to serve.
Opportunities to serve on the board include:
Executive Officers: Each position is open for election each year the term
is for one year (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer) and
they are voted on each year. Current serving officers can run for concurrent
terms, but another member needs to nominate them.
TV Reps (2 year terms):
Pierre Kattar has one more year on his 3-year term.
Ed Eaves term is up. He can be nominated to run again
One position is currently open and needs to be filled. So there are TWO
positions.
Still Reps (2 year terms):
Matt Cavanaugh and Allison Shelley have one year left in their terms.
Susan Biddle¹s term is up and she has announced she won't run again, so
there is ONE open position.

January 22 from complications of a rare blood disorder, Amyloidosis,
diagnosed in 2006:
Please forgive the informality of this note, but I wanted to get this
message out as soon as possible for those who are interested in or able to
attend a gathering of friends to remember Bernie. I have had the chance to
talk to many of you personally, and look forward to reaching many more in
the days ahead. In the meantime, here are the plans (casual, please). We
have two dates at two locations in order to make it convenient for our
far-flung friends to drop by one or the other. They are:
--Saturday, February 23 from 1 to 4 pm at the studio of Dennis Brack, 318

This photographic exhibit by photojournalist Sharon Farmer, Pro-Active Woman, is a declarative
statement on the politics, creativity, evolution, and persistence of women to make a better world.
A pro-active woman becomes the vital connector that stimulates events that impact our lives in
many important ways.
Sharon Farmer has recorded some of the most memorable moments in our history. Her documentation of communities in the Washington Metropolitan area led to an appointment in 1993 as an Official White House Photographer of President Bill Clinton's administration, and later she became the first woman Director of White House Photography.
The exhibit may be viewed during Museum hours through May 31st, 2008.

COLEMAN REED TUCKSON
It is with sadness that we report the passing of yet, another longtime
friend and colleague, Dr. Coleman Reed Tuckson, DDS. Coleman was a longtime
member of the WHNPA and worked with Arnie Sachs and his son, Ron for may
years at Consolidated News, contributing to their success with emphasis on
sporting events. Dr. Tuckson was most recently Professor Emeritus at Howard University School of Dentistry.

Boston, a nationally acclaimed photojournalist with an unerring eye for the telling image, died Tuesday Jan. 22, 2008, at his home in Basye, Va., after a hard fought battle against Amyloidoisis, a blood infection. WHNPA 2007 Project Grant
Freelance photographer Jamie Rose has been selected as the recipient of the White House News Photographers Association Education Committee 2007 Project Grant.
“Isolated: On the front lines with MSF in Northern Uganda” is about the doctors, nurses and aid workers of Medicins Sans Frontiers (Doctors Without Borders) and their work in the in the refugee camps in northern Uganda as they work to provide medical services to the 1.3 million refugees in the 20-year-long war between the Lord’s Resistance Army (the rebels) and the Ugandan military.
“Jamie wants to not only document an organization (MSF) that seems to get far too little credit for their work but do so in a war few people know is being fought”, Leighton Mark, WHNPA Education committee Chairman said.
Rose, who has worked with MSF in Africa before, plans to concentrate her efforts on the MSF volunteers and the plight of their patients, producing still photos, text, audio and a multimedia product. She also plans to give lectures upon her return to the United States to heighten awarness of the situation in Northern Uganda.

The American Society of Media Photographers is putting together an educational seminar, Strictly Business 2, for early 2008 and they have offered a discount on registration to WHNPA members. The event will run in four cities from January to April 2008. ASMP's Strictly Business 2 is an interactive weekend seminar designed to give participants the tools to build a successful and sustainable business. The SB2 weekend will include consultations, lectures, video presentations, a keynote address, workshops, hands-on negotiating training, and social gatherings.General admission is $300, but they are offering a $50 discount to our members. Susana Raab's 2005 WHNPA funded project grant, Consumed, was published as a portfolio by the Italian newsmagazine, Internazionale. A selection of images from the project will also be exhibited in a group exhibition, YUMMY!, at the Nexxus Foundation for the Arts in Philadelphia, from Dec. 13- February 1, 2008.

The Concord Monitor seeks a Director of Photography to lead its
award-winning staff.
The Monitor, a 20,000-circulation daily paper in New Hampshire's capital,
has a strong tradition of excellent daily photojournalism and documentary
projects. The Monitor staff has won many national awards, including NPPA,
SND and POYi awards for "Best Use of Photos", "Photo Story," campaign
coverage and picture editing. Columbia Journalism Review and Time magazines
called the Monitor one of the best small newspapers in the country.
The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills and a commitment to
coaching photographers. He or she will be highly organized, deadline driven
and have a track record of community journalism. The successful candidate
will also bring experience in multimedia storytelling on the web. In our
small newsroom, the photo editor works closely with the city editor and
features editors, generating story ideas and collaborating on design. The
job involves shooting periodic assignments when necessary. Outgoing photo

COLEMAN REED TUCKSON
It is with sadness that we report the passing of yet, another longtime friend and colleague, Dr. Coleman Reed Tuckson, DDS. Coleman was a longtime member of the WHNPA and worked with Arnie Sachs and his son, Ron for may
years at Consolidated News, contributing to their success with emphasis on sporting events. Dr. Tuckson was most recently Professor Emeritus at Howard University School of Dentistry.
BERNIE BOSTON
It is with great sadness that we inform you of you of the passing of yet another a longtime colleague and friend - Bernie Boston. Boston, a nationally acclaimed photojournalist with an unerring eye for the telling image, died Tuesday Jan. 22, 2008, at his home in Basye, Va., after a hard fought battle against Amyloidoisis, a blood infection.
