For eighty years, WHNPA photojournalists have been covering events and activities of major global importance, traveling with presidents and photographing royalty, diplomats, and newsmakers. They have been at the forefront of video and photographic technology, presenting the history of the world through their work. They are the "eyes of history." This exhibition offers visitors a rare opportunity to appreciate the art of journalism and to deepen their understanding of the influential role of photojournalists in shaping our perceptions of history.

JULY 2001

High School FOCUS on Photojournalism
(July 29 - August 3 , 2001)

This summer, the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, D.C. offered a rare and exciting opportunity for high school students nationwide to explore the world of political photojournalism in the nation's capital. Up to 45 qualified individuals had the chance to participate in an intensive 6-day photojournalism summer program led by members of the White House News Photographers' Association.

Through this unprecedented program, award-winning White House photojournalists provided participants with an in-depth look at the principles and practice of their trade. The high school summer program, which began on July 29, 2001 and continued until August 3, was hosted by the Corcoran College of Art and Design, located across the street from the White House and minutes from Capitol Hill. This central location offered the ideal place for participants to explore the photojournalist's role in sharing-- and shaping-- the news of Washington.

Throughout the week participants worked in small groups directed by a professional White House photojournalist, allowing the opportunity for group discussions and one-on-one critiques. Daily workshops and lectures delved into the real-life situations and settings faced by photojournalists, shedding light on the dynamic relationship between the press and politicians, and the secret to successful collaborations with writers, photo editors, and reporters. Tours of the offices of the Washington Post and US News & World Report, as well as photo shoots inside the Capitol and other federal buildings, provided participants with a hands-on perspective into the world of photojournalism.

Distinguished photojournalists, who have privileged access to newsmakers around the world, spoke each evening about specific techniques they use and the challenges they face. Scheduled faculty and lecturers included: Frank Johnson, Joe Elbert, and Carol Guzy of the Washington Post; Cliff Owen and J. Ross Baughman of the Washington Times; Gary Cameron and Gary Hershorn of Reuters News Service; Pete Souza of the Chicago Tribune; Kevin T. Gilbert, former President of the WHNPA; H. Darr Beiser of USA Today; Harry Walker of Knight Ridder Tribune Photo Service; Diana Walker of TIME Magazine; Chick Harrity of U.S. News & World Report; Susan Walsh (President of the WHNPA), Doug Mills, and Fred Sweets of the Associated Press; Maria Mann and Luke Frazza of Agence France Press; and Benedict Fernandez of Vision Fotos.
