Judging for the Eyes of History 2008 NEW MEDIA CONTEST will take place on Saturday January 19 (and Sunday, January 20, if required), at the National Geographic building. The public is welcome to observe the judging.
Please check in the lobby - you will need a badge or an escort for access.

Rich Beckman

RICH BECKMAN

Rich Beckman is a James L. Knight Distinguished Professor of Journalism and Director of the Visual Communication Sequence in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He has been at UNC-CH since 1978. During that time he served two terms on the Faculty Council; won the Tanner and David Brinkley Awards, both in recognition of excellence in undergraduate teaching; been a Fulbright Senior Scholar in South Africa, Chile and Spain; a charter member of the UNC-CH Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars and Carolina Speakers and also served as the Julian Sheer Term Professor of Journalism, an award given for overall excellence in teaching, research and service. He also twice chaired divisions within the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

His current area of teaching and writing is in the genre of multimedia design and production, although he began his career as a photojournalist and taught in that area for 20 years. He specializes in environmental journalism, working extensively with endangered predators in Alaska and Africa. As a producer, he has led teams that have won many of the most prestigious multimedia prizes in the world including the Pirelli INTERNETional Award for Educational Media and multimedia storytelling awards from the Online News Association, the National Press Photographers Association, The Broadcast Education Association, Horizon Interactive Awards, The Society for News Design and the Pictures of the Year International competitions. He has taught Summer School Study Abroad courses in eight countries.



Scott Ash

Scott is a recently retired U.S. Air Force photojournalist who, in his earliest days, documented the Exxon-Valdez oil spill off the coast of Alaska and the 1991 Santa Barbara fires, to covering the Secretary of the Air Force and Air Force Chief of Staff in the more recent. 

Some of his duty assignments include Vandenberg and Davis-Monthan Air Force bases in California and Arizona; Aviano Air Base, Italy, and the Pentagon.  His last station with the Air Force was Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., for over four years, where he served as the base multimedia manager.

He is a 2003 graduate of the military photojournalism program taught at S.I. Newhouse Public School of Communications, Syracuse University. 

He is from Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., and has been married to the former Lisa Juechter for over 20 years.


Jack Roland

Jack Rowland is the Deputy Director of Photo and Multimedia for tampabay.com, the web site for the St. Petersburg Times. In 23 years at the Times he has contributed as a staff photographer, chief photographer, picture editor, technology director and deputy director of photography. Currently he is leading the transition of seven staff photographers to video. Jack is a 1984 graduate of the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications. He lives in Tampa with his wife, two children and two beagles.
