STILL CONTEST JUDGES
COLIN
CRAWFORD As
assistant managing editor
for photography at the
Los Angeles Times, Colin
Crawford manages a staff
of editors, photojournalists
and technicians at one
of the largest newspapers
in the country. Under his
leadership, The Times'
photography department
has won the Pulitzer Prize
in Feature Photography
in both 2004 and 2003 (three
staff photographers also
were Pulitzer finalists
in 2003). In 2004, The
Times' photo staff garnered
the Angus McDougall Overall
Excellence in Editing Award
for Newspapers, and the
Best Use of Photography
in the Pictures of the
Year International competition.
In 2004, Colin won the
Jim Gordon Editor of the
Year Award. In citing him,
the National Press Photographer's
Association said that Colin's
efforts show “that
large newspapers can provide
strong documentary photojournalism.
His hard work and dedication
have moved the industry
forward.” With Colin's
direction, staff photojournalists
are dispatched throughout
the world, covering wars
and social issues, and
have produced courageous
and striking work on noteworthy
projects and daily coverage.
Colin holds a bachelor's
degree in political science
from UCLA and is married
with two children.
John
Kaplan is one of America's most accomplished
photojournalists. Kaplan has been awarded the Pulitzer
Prize for Feature Photography, the POY National Photographer
of the Year, the 2003 Overseas Press Club Award,
two Robert F. Kennedy Awards, and the Nikon Documentary
Sabbatical Grant. In 2003, Kaplan's
project on survivors of torture in West Africa was
given the Overseas Press Club Award for Feature Photography
and the Harry Chapin Media Award. The project was
also recognized by the RFK Foundation, National Headliner
Awards, Best of Photojournalism Competition, Pictures
of the Year International, Society of News Design
and PDN Best of Photography Contest. The United Nations
has asked to use Kaplan's work to help facilitate
contact with the victims. A full
professor at the University of Florida, Kaplan has
twice been named a photography juror for the Pulitzer
Prizes. Kaplan exhibits, shares
his work and teaches throughout the world, including
Visa Pour L’image
in Perpignan, France and the Maine Photographic Workshops.
His work has appeared in LIFE, The New York Times,
American Photo and numerous book annuals. He was
also one of the editors for the America 24/7 book
project. During the past five years,
his recent solo exhibitions have been shown in the
United States, Peru, Bolivia and Korea and Kaplan
has participated in group shows in the U.S., United
Kingdom, France, Japan, Korea, Canada, South Africa,
Australia and New Zealand. In 2003,
Kaplan’s
second book, "Photo Portfolio Success, was published
by Writers Digest Books. His work

Annie
O'Neill is currently
the Knight Fellow at Ohio University. She
has been a staff photographer for the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette for nearly ten years. During
her time at the Post-Gazette she has won numerous
awards including: Pennsylvania Photographer of the
Year twice, Pittsburgh Photographer of the Year three
times, and individual awards from
POYi, BOP and SND. In 2001 her first book "Unquiet
Ruin - A Photographic
Excavation" was published. She is currently
working on her second book, "The
Gift of Work."
