Looting and violence raged in the commercial district of the Haitian capital after the devastating January 12 earthquake. In many cases, the police gave up chasing people out of the area.

MOUNTAIN FIRE

Soldiers with Alpha Company 2-327 (TF No Slack) 1BCT of the 101st Airborne Division make a small fire to keep warm high up in the mountains on border of Afghanistan and Pakistan. The soldiers, along with their Afghan counterparts, were holding a security position for a downed aircraft rescue team working nearby. The abandoned outpost, a former CIA base, sits on the border at the Ghaki Pass in eastern Kunar province of Afghanistan.
