General comments from the judges
We found that nat sound generally wasn't used well. Mostly, it was a secondary layer instead of being an integral part of narrations. There were missed opportunities for nat sound. Instead, reliance of interview and narration was used.
Many pieces needed more breadth and breaks in their pacing. There was a lot of cutting in the middle of a word or the middle of a thought. There is a disconnect when an image changes in the middle of a thought; the viewer immediately focuses on the image and can't pay attention to to what's being said.
Three things that need to be back and/or eliminated: unnecessary movement on images, cross fades and beginning a story with text.
- Movement on images is distracting and should be used minimally at best.
- We see in "blinks" which is natural; avoid cross fades / dissolves. (Referenced "In the Blink of an Eye" by Walter Murch.)
- Don't rely on text at the beginning of a story for explanation. Introductions - the first 30 seconds to one minute - are critical to set up the story. Provide structure with audio, stills, video, graphics instead of text in introductions.
