A VITAL NEED
After spending the night in the parking lot, hundreds of people gather in the morning at the gate of the Wise County, fairgrounds in Wise, Va., on July 24, 2008, to wait for their numbers to be called to enter the Remote Area Medical (RAM) free clinic. If they make the cutoff, they will be among those who receive free medical, dental and vision care that day. If not, many will have to wait until next year's clinic to try to get this vital care, as the majority of people here rely on this for their medical needs. RAM is a nonprofit organization established to provide medical care in third-world countries, but the need in the U.S. has become so great that over half of RAM's clinics are now held in the U.S.
